Run for Something is currently hiring for a Chief of Staff. In this role, you will report to Co-Founder/Co-executive Director Amanda Litman.
The Chief of Staff will have a bird’s eye view across the organization, connecting the dots and providing strategic guidance. You will be managing across the executive team to support cross-team communication and project/process management. You will also be working as a strategic advisor to organizational leadership, helping identify key gaps, room for improvement, and following up on action items to ensure execution meets the organization’s standard for excellence. You will be managing the executive office of the co-executive directors (including supporting on executive communication), managing a leadership team of department heads, and acting as an extension of co-executive directors.
As a member of RFS leadership, this position must also contribute, integrate, and hold themselves and their department accountable to the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goals that Run for Something has established, and actively contribute towards the creation of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture.
Managing coordination/communication across and in support of the executive team, as well as between the executive team and the RFS staff (60% of time):
- Connecting the dots across team leads and senior organization leadership to ensure all trains are moving in the right direction and essential communication loops are functioning properly
- Managing a team of department heads, and ensuring communication loops between department heads
- Leading communication between executive team and staff. This could include managing and organizing staff calls, retreats, and events; systematizing knowledge management as the organization scales; and managing internal communications and messaging to staff
- Managing the strategic planning process, by working with RFS leadership and department heads to ensure alignment between organizational goals and strategy
- Bridge intradepartmental gaps and maintain continuity during leadership and structural changes
- Work closely with the executive team to develop and implement new management processes and improve strategic development across the organization
- Create and present reports to the RFS Board of Directors as needed quarterly
- Manage, mentor, and coach staff in line with RFS values and performance management standards to ensure relevant key performance indicators are met; identify and support areas for professional development; as a manager of managers, ensure RFS performance standards and values are apparent through all departments.
- As a member of RFS leadership, contribute to organization-wide strategy and initiatives; be an active leader and advocate for RFS’ philosophy, mission, values, culture, and DEI goals throughout the organization
Project management (20% of time):
- Oversee large cross-functional/organization-wide special projects and initiatives, bringing together stakeholders to help drive decisions toward organization goals
- Researching, benchmarking and analyzing data and making recommendations
- Creating systems and processes to streamline cross-team coordination
- Run the RFS monitoring and evaluation and research programs, in concert with department heads, to ensure our work is data-informed and always improving
Advising and supporting the co-executive directors (20% of time):
- Ensure the that co-EDs assets, skills, and relationships are leveraged to advance the organization’s missions and goals
- Serve as a thought partner to the co-EDs, helping to resolve key challenges and act as an “early warning system” for issues bubbling up across the organization
- -Ensure the co-EDs are involved at the right point in the process
- Act as the co-EDs proxy when appropriate
- Build and manage the executive office, including administrative assistants, executive communications staff, and other consultants as needed
- All members of the RFS team are aligned in strategy, goals, and process and understand who does what and how to get things done across the organization
- Cross-team projects are done efficiently and effectively
- Executive office is supported and staff are executing at a high level of excellence
- Experience with campaigns, political/advocacy organizations, and/or non-profits or other large complex organizations with a track record of success in responsible leadership
- Past experience serving on an executive leadership team
- Experience managing large teams (5+ members), especially managing other managers and coaching staff
- Understanding of 501c3, 501c3, and 527/PAC structures and basic compliance
- Experience with organizational change management and scaling Strong communication skills, especially in written/digital formats
- Strong project management skills and experience, which includes organized, detail-oriented, coordinating across multiple departments, managing divergent stakeholders with competing goals, and holding folks accountable to deadlines
- Experience creating and managing budgets
- Skilled at managing up to multiple principals with divergent work styles
- Proven ability to manage peers in executing toward a shared goal
- Effective problem-solver with judgment and discretion; able to quickly triage crises and identify which can be solved independently and which require input and from whom
- Experience managing relationships with deep emotional intelligence and maturity
- Demonstrated ability to work in and contribute to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment

- Ability to work independently for extended periods of time in a remote environment

- 10+ years work experience
- Experience as an executive director, managing director, CXO, or comparable title
- Experience managing or working with fully remote teams (especially prior to the pandemic)
- Direct experience working with principals
- Experience in short-term and long-term strategic planning
Run for Something is (and always has been and will be) a remote office environment; you will collaborate with colleagues who are based across the United States. You should be prepared to either work from home or a location of your choosing.
When it is safe to do so, this position will require attendance at approximately 2 all-staff events per year, which may include overnight travel. Other travel (1-2x quarterly) may be requested. This position requires the ability to work core hours, Monday through Thursday.
This position will require some nights and weekends work.
- As this is a remote position, the person in this position must be able to communicate with colleagues and partners via phone, including conference and video calls, as well as written communication such as Slack and email.
- The position requires the ability to work on a computer for all or part of the work day.
- The position requires the ability to attend events which may encompass all or part of the work day.
- This position will include travel, as described above.
Salary for this position is set at $198,100. In order to counter pay inequality and uphold internal parity, salaries are non-negotiable for new and current employees. Run for Something salary bands for a given staff level are benchmarked to the 75th percentile for our sector, and all new employees are paid at the entry point of those bands. Employees then have the opportunity to progress through current salary bands through annual cost of living increases and performance-based pay increases, and into new salary bands through promotions.
