Northzone is looking for a Chief of Staff for their Amsterdam-based General Partner, Michiel Kotting. The role will touch on all aspects of venture capital, from portfolio management and investing, to building the firm and working on internal strategic topics and projects. We see this as a unique opportunity to build a deep understanding and skill set in the business of both investing in and working with early stage technology companies, while receiving a ton of 1-to-1 training to set you up for a successful long-term career in venture.
Northzone is one of the most successful early stage venture funds in Europe, partnering with founders across a wide range of areas, from SaaS, fintech and marketplaces, to consumer, digital health and web 3.0, and everything in between. We focus on being an early partner to daring entrepreneurs that want to shape the world, and have had the privilege to work with phenomenal companies such as Spotify, Personio, Klarna, Spring Health, Hopin, Forto, Truelayer, and many, many more. Our Nordic heritage contributes to our transparent, meritocratic, and entrepreneurial culture, where we take a human-centric approach to investing. With offices in London, Stockholm, New York, Berlin, and Amsterdam, we hold a truly global investment perspective.
Michiel is a two-time former entrepreneur (one ‘hit’, one ‘miss’) who’s been in the tech ecosystem for a long time across many locations, before returning to his home city of Amsterdam in 2019. With more than a decade in venture, he’s been involved with companies like Personio, Kahoot, Forto, Tier, Fiverr and Vinted, and has a strong passion for helping entrepreneurs figure out how to crack the incredible challenge of creating something out of nothing and getting the most out of their teams. He has a deep curiosity about a wide range of industries, is currently on the board of multiple companies across five different countries, and loves to remain busy, which tends to result in an overloaded calendar and weekly flights!
Michiel is looking for someone to work with closely on a day-to-day basis to amplify the impact he can have for his portfolio companies and in shaping the firm. The Chief of Staff will work across all components of Michiel’s work: help portfolio companies succeed, interact with the founders and executive teams we partner with, find and screen investment opportunities, build the Northzone network in the tech ecosystem, and work on strategic initiatives and projects to constantly improve the firm’s operations, and ultimately win in this thriving tech ecosystem.
The work is analytical, communicative, and requires both business judgement and strong EQ. The idea is to fulfil the role for about 18 months, after which you will have the opportunity to move into a full-time investment role and hopefully a long-term career at Northzone. The Chief of Staff position is based in Amsterdam and involves significant travel; for the subsequent investment role, you will be able to choose to be based in any of our offices.
We’re looking for a self-starter who is ambitious and who has a strong passion for how entrepreneurship can change the world. Proven and practically-applied analytical prowess is a must (e.g. experience from consulting, analytical roles at a start-up or scale-up, or similar). Time spent as an entrepreneur or at a start-up is a plus. We’d expect you to have 2-5 years of work experience. Moreover, you need to be intrigued by a career as an investor, but don’t need to be sure at this point that that is you ‘for life’. As ours is a people’s business, social skills are key to success, as is a strong fit with our culture. The nature of the role requires a good click between the partner and the Chief of Staff, which we’ll figure out during the interview process. As Michiel’s MO is to be relatively chaotic in an already hectic job, it would be good if you are more structured and process-oriented (which is unlikely to be hard!).
