Chief of Staff to the CEO

As the Chief of Staff to the CEO at GitHub, you’ll partner with the CEO to operate GitHub’s business, consult on key decisions, lead strategic workstreams across the company, and be a key confidant across a variety of projects. You’ll be a critical partner to the Leadership Team organizing staff meetings, the overall rhythm of the business, and driving initiatives out of the office of the CEO. Your role is part thought-partner and part-executor, helping refine business strategy and driving the overall business to execute on that strategy efficiently and effectively.

This role requires a highly resourceful, self-driven individual with the ability to partner, execute, and lead through influence. At times, you’ll be driving the company’s overall rhythm of the business through operational reviews, off-sites, and company wide events. At other times, you’ll be identifying opportunities for improvement through the overall business and working with the right leaders to make impact swiftly. Your goal is to ensure the CEO’s time is effectively used by acting as a proxy decision maker, a subject-matter expert, and a decisive decision maker.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the overall rhythms of the business while consistently driving for improvement: this includes weekly staff meetings, CEO communications meetings, business reviews, and their processes.
  • Attend meetings on behalf of the CEO and act on their behalf where appropriate.
  • Coordinate customer briefings and follow-up on discussions to provide coordination and follow-through on requests.
  • Continuously monitor a wide range of company performance indicators and projects and highlight key details to the CEO for timely decision making.
  • Lead weekly prioritization of CEO speaking opportunities, messaging needs, decision making and progress reviews.
  • Lead key projects and initiatives on behalf of the CEO working across functions to drive impact.
  • Prioritize key meetings and engagements for the CEO in partnership with the Office of the CEO staff. You’ll build context around key engagements, ask the necessary questions, and ensure it is a valuable use of the CEO’s time.
  • Act as the CEO’s proxy and highly-accessible information source for other major functions, including Product, Engineering, Communications, PR, Marketing, Revenue, HR, Talent Acquisition, Finance, Legal and Operations.

Required qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience driving operational process by partnering effectively with cross-functional teams
  • 5+ years of experience working in a highly technical industry
  • 8+ years of leadership experience and subject matter expertise in Product, Engineering or Sales organizations
  • Travel Requirements ~ Minimum of 25%
  • Excellence in written business communications, including artifacts considered executive-ready and a proven pattern of high-quality decision making with a strategic impact.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a Chief of Staff and in management consulting with demonstrated Program Management skills on complex initiatives.
  • Knowledge of modern software development workflows, tooling, ecosystems and a familiarity with techniques and patterns of organizational design.
  • Proven results in working with C-level stakeholders and the ability to lead through influence.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity through curiosity and research.

Minimum salary of $122,500 to maximum $325,000

These pay ranges are intended to cover roles based across the United States. An individual's base pay depends on various factors including geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant. At GitHub certain roles are eligible for benefits and additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These rewards are allocated based on individual impact in role. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee's role.

Location: In this role, you can work remotely from anywhere in the United States.
